Review: Angel Lover

Angel Lover by Tricia Skinner (ARC Review)
Angel Assassins Book 2
Published June 30, 2015 by Entangled: Select Underworld
4.5 Broken Wings!

"The sign of a great series is when you find yourself loving each book that much more than the last. This installment is my new fave of the series."

Synopsis -

There’s no danger greater than falling for your enemy…

The Nephilim are bound. Their powers cursed. But half-angel Kasdeja will do anything to free them from Heaven's tyranny. When Kas is approached by a striking, mysterious woman, she tells him his greatest enemies hold the key to his freedom.

Mariel keeps herself shrouded in secrets, using them to hide her true self. For she is not just employed by the Renegades--enemy fallen angels—she is a double agent, working on the sly for Heaven. Her directive is to seduce the gorgeous Nephilim—despite her insecurity about such sensual acts.

For Mariel is playing a dangerous game, and falling for Kas could only cause trouble; her assignment isn't just seduction. It's destruction.  (Goodreads)

Review -

Ever since the beginning of the series its been in the back of readers' minds; Did any of the Bound Ones fathers' survive? Are there any other angels, besides the Renegades, who would like to see the Directorate take a nasty fall? Those questions are finally answered in Angel Lover. And the father and son interaction is not something fans want to miss, and will love as long as they don't expect a heartfelt reunion.

Kasdeja has always seen his talent of reading minds to be just short of nothing. Especially when compared to that of his brothers; mind control, ultrasonic soundwaves, forcefields. Though he does see his value within the team for technological savvy, others see him as the weakest link and plan on taking that to their advantage. They dangle several carrots in front his nose to sway him in crossing over the other side. The one carrot that is the most enticing is the wingless angel that continues pulling at his heartstrings. The question there is, whose side is she really on? Will what they offer Kas be enough for him to betray the only family he has ever known?

Mariel is plagued by the loss of her team. Making the ultimate sacrifice in order to make sure their killers pay and their souls can be lain to rest, she immerses within the enemies camp. When asked by the Renegades to bring Kasdeja into their fold by any means necessary she has to ask herself just how far she's willing to go, and if she even has a choice in the matter. But the more time she spends with her charge, the more she begins to question the motive behind both sets of her bosses actions, and the more she feels guilty for betraying Kas. And when she learns the truth behind all of the lies, there may be Hell to pay within the ranks of Heaven.

Seems as though another of the Bound has found a woman that is strong, smart, independent and far from being a damsel in distress.

Angel Lover is a definite must read. While it can be read as a stand alone, I would NOT recommend doing so. Readers picking up this series for the first time should begin with book 0.5, you will not be lost and will be able to enjoy the read it will be so much more rewarding when read in order. Set within the heart of my hometown Detroit brings this series close to home with all the detailed descriptions of landscapes many wouldn't even know about. Full of action, intrigue, loyalty and betrayal, Angel Assassins is a series that can enjoyed by Urban Fantasy lovers of any gender.

Angel Bait Review

Angel Bait by Tricia Skinner
Angel Assassins Book 0.5
Re-Published October 31, 2014 by Rowan Publishing
5 Celestial Stars!

"Skinner has given new meaning to the phrase 'The Sins of the father shall be paid through the son.'"

Synopsis:

He's not that kind of angel.

Jarrid is a “Bound One”: half angel, half human, trained from childhood to enforce Heaven’s laws on earth. An assassin with no remorse. And no choice. When he discovers an ancient ritual called Ascension, which might give him a shot at freedom, he can’t resist his lifelong dream. He only needs to find one last Renegade angel and take him down…using a certain woman to flush the angel out of hiding.

She's not what he's expecting.

News reporter Ionie Gifford has no clue an outlaw angel wants her dead, much less why, but she does know one thing: the enigmatic Jarrid, with his penetrating silver eyes and his worship-worthy body, is her ticket to the city's supernatural underworld, where she might finally be able to locate her mother's killer. For that kind of information, she's willing to risk everything...

They can't be together -- but can't keep apart...

Blindsided by Ionie's beauty and tenacity, Jarrid finds the millennia-old glacier around his heart melting. But when he's faced with a choice, will he sacrifice Ionie for freedom from his brutal servitude—or agree to be bound for eternity, to protect the life of the woman he's falling in love with?

From novelist Tricia Skinner comes a story that will have fans of action-packed love stories applauding. Seamlessly combining elements of paranormal romance and gritty urban fantasy, the Angel Assassins series is a heart-pounding spin on angel mythology. (Goodreads)

Review:

Being re-published on Halloween, what better way to unwind after peeling kids out of costumes, washing off layers of face-paint and dealing with kids bouncing off the walls with sugar highs than curling up with a fun, short, bloody supernatural read that puts a whole new twist in the Fallen Angel genre?

Many who have read Angle Kin without having had the benefit of reading Angel Bait may have wondered who the mysterious Ionie was, and just how she became an honorary member of the team, or more appropriately, what. Turns out her ties run deeper than her relationship with Jarid.

Referred to by the Others as a Scribe, reporter Ionie Gifford has always been bound and determined to find her mother's killer.  So when she finds one of the infamous Bound standing in her boss' office needing her help she believes its the answer to her prayers, and strikes a deal in her favor. But she is far from naive and is also determined to discover the real reason Angels, half or not, would need to seek her out of all people. When she learns the truth it may shatter more than her heart.

After being saved from an imminent death, Jarrid and his brothers learn the hard way at a very tender young age, they were saved only to serve. Years of servitude, belittlement, disrespect and punishment, has lead to the teams utter hatred of Angel kind. When Jarid learns a piece of information that could lead to The Bound's freedom he sets up what he feels is a concrete plan. What he hadn't planned on was falling in love with the bait.

In exquisite detail Tricia Skinner shows the city of Detroit in a whole new light. One in which the murder count is still high but far beyond just random. Angel Bait sheds more light on the history of the Bound Ones, their punishment and the Directorate that sees them as nothing more than abominations that should not be allowed to live. I highly recommend this book to both lovers of Urban Fantasy and Fallen Angels, but only to those who are not the faint of heart. More than a little bit of blood, violence, loyalty and love, Angel Bait is one of those prequels that should not be skipped.

Angel Kin Review

Angel Kin by Tricia Skinner (ARC Review)
Angel Assassins Book 1
Published April 28, 2014 by Entangle Edge
4.5 Fangs

"Sometimes even Angels' find themselves questioning Heaven's dictates, and must take matters into their own hands."

Synopsis -

While channeling Robin Hood's "steal from the rich and give to the poor" attitude at a local politician's house, ex-con Katie Logan witnesses a forced suicide. Dirty or not, supernatural or not, he didn't deserve to die, especially not by his own hand. But with her record, stepping forward as a witness isn't an option. On the run from the police and the murderer, she turns to The Bound Ones for help.

When a beautiful woman comes to The Bound Ones, half-angel assassin Cain is immediately drawn to her. But when she fingers him as the killer, he can come to only one conclusion. The twin he thought was dead is very much alive…and trying to send him a message. Unfortunately, that message is: "You're next."

It's a race against time as Cain fights to save the woman he's falling in love with before his brother Abel destroys them both.  (Goodreads)

Review -

Finally, an Urban Fantasy centered in the D!  Lets face it, what better place to be centered around Paranormal Activity than Detroit city.  Where the crime rate is so high that even the Mayor of the city is a widely known criminal, so having seething creatures around should come as no surprise.

Angel Kin is the first of a potentially amazing Urban Fantasy series', Angel Assassins. Involving Fallen Angels, and the dictate where Heaven decreed that all of their children, Nephilm, and wives be decimated. Only four children were allowed to survive, The Bound Ones, after the pleading of one warrior angel, Tanis.  So it should come to no surprise to Heaven when another faction us formed, The Renegades.   A group of Fallen Angels Hel bent on seeing Heaven taken down.  After the brutal war that took the lives of their families,  rage is the only emotion they truly feel, and what they raised Abel on, the Nephilm who got away. The question remains,  is he the only one?

Angel Kin is centered around two Nephilm brothers, Cain and Abel, by being named such one could say they were doomed from the start.  After being secreted away by the Renegades at a very young age,  brought up on nothing more than rage and brutality,  Abel has thought of nothing more than revenge against the brother whom he believes abandoned he and their family to perish.  Planning on not only destroying his name but taking his life as well, it seems pure dumb luck when an eye witness identifies Cain as the killer, being identical twins comes in handy with his plots and schemes.

Cain is taken aback when an eye witness seeks The Bound Ones aid in protection from a killer whom she seen not just kill a man, but force him to kill himself, fingers him as the killer.  Indicating the impossible, the brother he thought he had lost centuries ago was still alive.  But that hope turns into something else once his suspicions are confirmed with a note carved into the dead body, "You're next".

Skinner has created a world where the Gangsters are truly out for blood since they are Vampires, and where Heaven has turned their Half-Breeds into deadly Assassins.  Where people will have even more reason to fear walking the streets of Detroit alone at night.
