When Miranda makes music with Leo, she plays like an angel. But Leo knows they’re playing with fire. There’ll be hell to pay – literally. A dark romance with a supernatural twist: The Omen for the Twilight generation.
What price would you pay for superlative talent?
Sparks fly when pianist Leo steps in to help Miranda audition for a violin scholarship to the prestigious Harkness Conservatory. He’s intense, patient, gorgeously French, and he plays the piano like a dream. The way they play the Kreutzer Sonata goes beyond anything she’s experienced.
But while 17-year old Miranda is impressing the panel, another candidate goes missing. From that moment, something ungodly seeps into her life. The question is – did the music draw in the forces of darkness? Or was it already there?
Oblivious to the ongoing search for the missing musician, Miranda and Leo travel to a medieval town in France, to perform in a prize-winners’ concert. Their attraction intensifies, even as Leo is revealed to have disturbing, even violent, family connections. Miranda is warned off…but it may already be too late.
Only a secretive, ancient sect can protect Miranda now. How can she accept their help when she can’t quite accept that she’s in danger?

UnHoly Death
Chapter 1
Zanethios
The Cold water bites into my hand as silver liquid streams down the drain. My thoughts scroll through every moment of the battle: Nesy’s eyes bulging as Azza’s sword cuts through her armor, piercing her heart; Aydan and Mikayel’s screams splitting through the night sky; Nesy’s mind closing in on itself. It’s all too much. My knees buckle. I cling to the basin and wait for the wave of emotion to pass. Nothing I do erases the images permanently burned into my memories. No amount of meditation calms my soul. No amount of water removes the blood, her blood, from my hands, my arms, my clothes.
Nesy is gone.
Forever gone.
I try to shake away the thoughts that refuse to retreat, desperate for a respite I know will never come.
“Zane?”
The voice pushes aside my grief.
“Zane. Mikayel’s asking for you.”
I focus on the voice, forcing myself to respond, move, anything. But I can’t. I’m locked in a grief I don’t fully understand; one I never thought I would feel. Not like this.
Never like this.
“Zane! Come. Mikayel’s waiting.”
Cass touches my shoulder and enters my heart. Her presence fills me with a peace only the Anointed can command. I breathe her in and silently beg her to clear away my pain. One moment bleeds into the next. The feelings ebb. I take another breath. Her presence spreads through me. Until finally there is peace. At last.
But for how long?
“I’m coming,” The words are thick against my mouth. “I’m coming.”
I dry my hands and follow Cass away from my quarters. The hallowed halls stream past me in a blur. Everything is surreal and detached, as though I am no longer part of this world at all. I grow thin with each step and I wonder…
Will I fade away completely?
Cass pulls me through the labyrinth towards the Council chamber. Is Mikayel back? Has he avenged Nesy’s death?
Anointed and Mediators run through the halls. Their faces speak a truth I cannot bear—the war has cost more than we’d expected. More than I expected. Sentinals and Guardians pour from portals, their bodies marred with the signs of battle. Blood, demonic and angelic, stain their armor, their tunics, their wings. 1…30…75. I count the angels running past me. Less than half have returned. Are the rest still battling? I know the answer before the question fully forms. The battle is over.
Nesy is gone.
Azza is gone.
And Aydan...
Aydan...
My mind reaches for him. His torment and pain flood my senses. My hand searches for Cass’s, desperate to cling to something stronger than me. My legs again buckle under the weight of too much emotion. Mine, Aydan’s, the angels’. It’s more than I can bear, more than any of us can.
Why did this have to happen?
Aydan’s rage lingers in the air. I sense the beast that still lives within him. How long before he succumbs to it? How long before he forgets Nesy and becomes everything Azza has intended.
How long?
“This way.” Cass again pulls me out of my thoughts as I walk away from the antechamber, noticing Aydan’s broken shell curled in on itself. Sobs rack his body like waves buffeting a boat. He will not recover from this. If she dies, he will also.
If she dies—
The thought betrays my hopes. Of course she’ll die. No one can survive Azza’s sword. Not even Mikayel. What chance does Nesy have now?
What chance do any of us have?
Cass tugs on my arm as we wind through the halls into a chamber I’ve never seen. The walls shine with an eerie indigo glow. Two large angels, Mikayel and Raphael, pray over a golden angel marred by a never-ending stream of silver blood.
Nesy.
The blood pools around her still body and I know it’s too much. She cannot survive this, no matter how much we pray. My mouth opens to speak; the sound dies long before the words form. Cass again calms my heart.
Or is it Raphael calming me now?
“Go.” Cass nudges me forward. “He’s waiting.” My feet remain glued to the spot, permanently tethered to the floor.
“I need a minute,” Mikayel whispers to Raphael. He nods and turns toward me. A single tear streams down his face.
I’m not used to seeing the Council show such intense emotion, even for those that have fallen. But somehow, Nesy’s death has touched them all.
“She’s not yet dead,” Raphael says as he passes. “But I have no way to heal her.”
I nod, still unable to speak.
“I’ll be back,” Cass whispers before turning to leave with her master. She’s handling this well. She’s stronger than me, stronger than any of us.
When did that happen? I was always the strongest amongst us.
Before.
“Zane.” Mikayel’s voice is hollow, detached. It fills me with a profound sadness I can almost taste. “Come.”
He motions for me to join him. I stare at the broken body—her body—lying on the altar next to Mikayel. Her wings, limp and lifeless, hang alongside her body and drape along the floor. Silver blood glistens from her wounds and coats her skin. Her breastplate is gone, revealing the full depth of her injuries. Azza’s sword penetrated her lungs and pierced her heart, leaving an angry red gash in its wake.
“She still lives. Barely.”
“Is there anything anyone can do?” The words burn against the back of my throat. I cough, choking on my own grief.
“Perhaps.” Mikayel turns away from Nesy. His gaze locks with mine. “There is something that may help her still, something I have told no one.”
My brows furrows as I try to decipher the look of madness now etched on Mikayel’s face.
“Do you know the way to Azzaziel’s realm?”
“Yes.” My voice quivers.
“I need you to go there. For Nesy.”
“To Azza? No. He’s the reason—”
“Not to Azza.” Mikayel’s voice grows cold. “To the demonic smoke that lives in the labyrinth.”
“Why?”
“It owes me a favor; one I intend on collecting.”
“I don’t understand. What does the demonic smoke have to do with Nesy?”
“It has the power to bring her back.”
I stare at Mikayel in disbelief. There is nothing that can be done for her now, nothing good at least.
“The demonic smoke is something different from us, different from Azzaziel. It has the power to heal her wounds and turn her mortal. But it won’t get involved unless you go and bargain with it.”
“Me? What could I possibly offer? And why can’t you go? You said it owed you the favor.”
“It does. But as you know, the smoke lives in Azza’s realm. He will know of my presence the second I arrive, and Azza can never learn of what we are about to do.” Mikayel swallows hard, the lines of his face like stone. “I know I ask a lot, but this is the only way. A deal must be bartered and Azza must not find out. You are the only one I trust, the only one—”
“Who is expendable.”
“No. The only one I am willing to send. But it must be your choice. Azza will sense your presence if you are only there on my command.”
I turn away from Mikayel. My hands ball into fists at my side. Everything about the request feels wrong—the bargain with this mysterious entity, pushing the limits of the natural order by bringing Nesy back from the dead, everything.
“She is not dead yet,” Mikayel says, sensing my hesitation. “But this is the only way to save her.”
There is no way I can refuse, no way to live with myself if I do. I push aside the growing doubt and fear that clouds my thoughts, push away the image of Nesy dying in front of me, push away my consciousness screaming “No.”
There is only one thing I can say, only one phrase that will form on my lips. “When do I leave?”
“One more thing, Zane, the Council cannot know of this task. Gabriel cannot know.”
I face Mikayel and my face hardens with my doubts. “I will not lie to my master.”
“I’m not asking you to lie. Just don’t seek his permission. I will talk with Gabriel after you’ve left.” Mikayel squares his shoulders and burns into my thoughts. I won’t forsake my master. Not even for Nesy.
Mikayel’s eyes release me and settle on the broken body of Nesy, so lifeless in front of us. “This, her injuries, they’re my fault. I won’t have her die because of me. I can’t let that happen again.”
“Again? So the stories Azza told her were true.”
“I have caused many deaths, yes.”
Anger bubbles through me. “You feel guilty. That’s what this is really about. And you need me to fix it for you.” The words sound more like Nesy’s than my own, only she would be screaming by now.
Mikayel bristles as he focuses his attention back to me.
“I’m right, aren’t I? Sir.”
Anger changes to sympathy in his eyes. “You feel deeply for Nesy, don’t you?”
The truth in his words startles me.
“I recognize the emotion in your eyes. Don’t try to deny it. You will help me because you know it’s the only way to save her. And, Zanethios, you need her to live as much as I do.”
“But becoming mortal, human? It isn’t the same as being healed.”
“True, but it’s the only chance we have. The only way she can survive at all.”
His words hang in the air, tempting me. He’s right about my feelings for Nesy. I do need her to survive. My feelings are more complex than I’ve admitted to anyone, including myself. In truth, I don’t understand them. All I know for certain is I can’t imagine a world where Nesy is gone.
I swallow back the apprehension that lodges in my throat. “Are you certain this demonic smoke will comply with my request?”
“It has no choice. It owes me a favor. But, there will still be a price to pay. It will expect payment. You need to be cautious. Don’t be fooled if it seems to understand you, your heart and your feelings. It is nothing more than illusion dressed up in smoke; a trickster that feeds from the chaos it creates. Nothing more. Do you understand me?”
“I understand.”
“You must mind your emotions when you are in Azza’s realm. They have served you well in the past. But with the smoke, they will betray you.”
Shock fills my cells. What emotions? “I have no emotions to mind.”
A smile forms in Mikayel’s eyes. “That may work with your friends and Gabriel. But I know the truth. You are more like me, more like Nesy, than you are willing to admit. Be careful you don’t let that become your weakness.”
Too many words stumble through me. They die before they are spoken, leaving only emotions that swirl in intoxicating patterns—feelings for Nesy, for Aydan. Hope and betrayal. Love and rage. It’s more than I can acknowledge, more than I can tolerate.
And none of it’s true—just an illusion, a trick of my grief, my mind. Something I’ve never acknowledged.
Nothing but a myth.
I think.

Dark Love

Dark Love

How far would you b willing to go for love? If you met someone online, who you knew in your heart and soul was the one for you. Someone you knew could fulfill your darkest desires, please you and keep you satisfied. Someone who knew exactly what u need. Would you travel across oceans to be with that person. Or would you be willing to live your life with what if?

I'm a dominant woman who needs an Alpha male. As with all aspects about me, there is no true category. I need a man who is man enough to handle me. Not a push over too afraid to even approach me because I'm too "intimidating". So far, the only men who have come close are in other continents.

But one, dear Goddess, he is more than just close. He is my other half. In exquisite dark detail, he has described everything I need, my every want, and not just in the bedroom. I feel my heart longing for him, my soul gravitating towards him. My body aches with need of him, my heart yearns to be with him. When I lay my head down to sleep I can feel his arms wrapped around me in a strong embrace, feel my face resting upon his chest. I can envision our children fighting, laughing, playing and loving one another. I can almost feel him pushing so deeply inside of me that I don't know where either of us begins or ends. Can feel the sweat of our bodies mingle as we take each other to an ecstasy that knows no bounds.

But, what if? What if I'm wrong? What if our fantasy is too good to b a true reality? What if I'm fooling myself in thinking he's as real as I need him to b? What if this is nothing more than a dream that I need to believe in this life of a nightmare that I am living now? What if, as with everyone who is supposed to love me, my blood kin, when we finally meet he feels that I am not worth his love, that I don't need it? What if this is all just an elaborate game to him and he just wants to see how far it will go?

But, what if I'm right? What if this is real and I find myself too afraid to make that leap of faith? What if I do take that chance and find him waiting for me with open arms, longing for me, needing me as I need him? What if with him, my home of my heart awaits?

Shall I take that leep? Or shall I spend my life wondering, what if? Would you?

The answer is yes. The only real love is one your willing to fight for, sacrifice for. My Dark Knight awaits. And have mercy on any soul that stands in our way.

The Shadows of Stormcylffe Hall Review

The Shadows of Stormclyffe Hall
By Lauren Smith
Published September 29, 2014 by Entangled Select
5 Haunted Stars!

"Gothic Romance at its' supernatural best."

Synopsis -

A thrilling gothic romance from Entangled’s Otherworld imprint…

To defeat a dark evil, they must face his family’s past…

Bastian Carlisle, the Earl of Weymouth, doesn’t believe in ghosts. Even though tragedy and mysterious hauntings have driven his family away from his ancestral home, Stormclyffe Hall, he is determined to restore the castle to its former glory. His plans are disrupted when a stubborn American shows up on his doorstep hoping to pry into his family’s tragic history.

Jane Seyton, an American graduate student, is convinced there’s more to the tragedy of Stormclyffe Hall than history claims. Ever the scholar, she is determined to discover the truth, even if it means putting up with the arrogant, yet sexy, Bastian.

Although Bastian wants nothing to do with the pushy American, it soon becomes clear that something evil is in the house—and that something is targeting both Jane and Bastian. The two must join forces to purge the ghosts of Stormclyffe Hall once and for all—even as they try to fight a physical attraction between them that grows more and more impossible to deny. (Goodreads)

Review -

Haunting's, tragic love affair, obsession, doomed love, all the makings of a great Gothic Romance that is sure to leave chills up and down the readers spines. Lauren Smith proves to be an amazing author with a talent to pull readers inside of her world, caring for her characters as deeply as they care for one another.

Doomed from the very beginning, due to a jealous rage of a witch gone mad, Bastien and Jane are being haunted with the memories of their ancestors. Though neither have ever met and are thousands of miles apart, their blood is calling them both to the shadowed estate of Stormeclyffe Hall.

Lucy has chosen to do her dissertation on the line of tragic deaths that seemingly every woman whom has dared to love a Earl of Weymouth has succumbed to. To do so, she must have something more solid than a few ghost stories. Which leads her across the seas to the infamous Stormclyffe, a place that sings to her blood and been the backdrop of her nightmares. As she comes closer to the truth of the manor, and her dreams, she also comes closer to her own demise.

Bastien Carlisle is bound and determined to see his Father's final wishes fulfilled, to reconstruct their families' home. Something that seems to be easier said than done. With workers who are too afraid to stay after dark, things breaking right after they have been fixed, it begins to look like an impossible task. Add on a stubborn American Scholar bound and determined to discover all of his family secrets, things seem even more desolate than impossible. But that little American is also awakening something that he had sworn to forever keep closed off, his heart. She is also awakening more than a few restless spirits. The more he is around her, the more he finds himself caring for her and the more he tries to stay away, gravity seems to pull them right back to each other. Which leaves him with but one choice; break a curse that he doesn't even believe in.

Its a race against time as Jane and Bastien try to "fix that which is broken", before its too late for them both. They must break a centuries old curse placed upon two ill fated lovers, who did nothing wrong other love the other.

Gothic Romance lovers will love this modern tale, as it also has more than a few scenes that flashback to days of old. Not a dull moment, nor a wasted page, The Shadows of Stormclyffe Hall is a true must read.

Review -

Took me quite a while to write this review, mainly because I had quite a bit of conflicting emotions in regards to the story-line. Did I not like it due to the fact that I did not read Book 1, Dark Paradise? Or did I just really not like the plot, or was it just the main character? While this book was very well written, descriptions were dead on and the author did know much of comings and goings in the Vodoun world, the plot in itself could use a little more help. Not to mention the main character could use a definite reality check and grow up. "With great power, comes great responsibilities." That saying is true with more than just super heroes. When you wield magic as powerful as what Mala LaCroix holds within her very soul, one cannot just dabble into it, begin a drastic spell, then stop in the middle and say, "Oh, never mind", especially when dealing with other people's souls.

Mala LaCroix is the last living LaCroix, a family of extremely powerful Voodoo Queens. As such she is next in line to the thrown when her Great Aunt passes on to the other side. An aunt whom she has promised to be an apprentice to, and learn how to wield her dark art. But when the time comes she is less than enthused. But with enemies from both sides of the grave out to kill her, maybe going with dear old Auntie isn't such a bad idea.

Landry Prince has escaped the hands of death once again. Only this time, he hasn't come back alone. There is a demon living beneath his skin, devouring his soul with every breath he takes. And the only one he can rely on to rid himself of the demon in the Voodoo Queen herself, Magnolia. The question in that scenario, at what lengths will she go? And how can he keep Mayla safe when he can barely even trust himself?

When the action and magic happen, they do indeed make an impression. Too bad there isn't enough of the good to outweigh the bad. And the supposed 'bad' characters are the ones who keep to story flowing. Just as Magnolia tried to explain to her bullheaded niece, there is no such thing as black magic, either the wielder has a black soul or a light one. The decisions you make and the reasons behind them are all that truly matter. Anyone who practices voodoo, or has any roots in the craft, art or religion, may want to skip this read, because what Mayla does in the end will make you want to make a special little doll with her name on it. This book reads more like a Y/A than a N/A, if not for the sex. The characters are not really at the maturity of someone in the twenties, more like teenagers who still don't know which way is up. With some tweaks, this series does carry a lot of potential. As it stands now... This book cannot be read as a stand-alone, too much needed information is lost without having read the first book.

Echoes in the Darkness Review

Echoes in the Darkness by Jane Godmn (ARC Review)
Published July 7, 2014 by Harlequin E
5 CREEPY CHILLS!

"Some Legacies are so dark that not the strongest of loves can revert them."

Synopsis -

Not betrothed, but beguiled.

In artistic circles she is the Divine Dita, Paris’ most sought-after nude model. But now she’s not so much posing as playing a role: fiancée to the next Earl of Athal. The charade is a favor to Dita’s friend, Eddie Jago, a dissolute painter…and the aforementioned heir. As deceptions go, it is innocent compared with what will come.

On the grim Cornish coast, from the ashes of a ruined castle rises the Jagos’ sumptuous new manor house. The fresh-hewn stone, however, cannot absorb the blood of centuries or quiet the echoes of past crimes. Dita struggles to decipher the family: the infirm Earl and his inscrutable wife; resentful Eddie; sheltered sister Eleanor. And Cad: the handsome second son whose reputation is spotless in business—scandalous everywhere else.

Drawn by friendship, ensnared by lust, Dita uncovers a sordid tangle of murder, desire and madness. It will lay her bare as no portraitist has done before.  (Goodreads)

Review -

Godman has truly mastered the art of Gothic Romance.  Every aspect needed to create the scene for a truly epic dark romance is within these pages; dark and deadly atmosphere, chills running up and down your spine, forbidden and dangerous love, question in the back of the readers mind if the lover is truly the killer and will he/she murder the one they love.

Many readers may have questioned the how wise of a choice it was for Lucy and Tynan to have children knowing the ghastly legacy they were passing on.  Especially when they ended up having three children, two sons and a daughter, in essence recreating the doomed trio of Uther, Demelza and Tynan's father.  If anyone were to know just how real the Jago Legacy was, it would be them.  Maybe the two fated lovers believed their love was so great that with the right upbringing of their children, they could overcome the curse of the name Jago.  Sadly, they couldn't have been more wrong.  Especially when they bring the family back to the Athal estate, rebuilding and renaming the castle to Tenebris, as though that would cleanse the old blood within its very soil.  Lucy and Tynan's mistake will cause countless others their lives.

Arwen Jago has been born again to the Jago line, the question readers will be questioning is to which brother?  The quiet Eddie, reluctant heir who despises the Jago name and the very walls Tenebris feel as though they are closing in on him, and ripping away his sanity.  Or is it Cad, the wild, scandalous Jago, who is the spitting image of Arwen and Uther, from the hair to the eyes, to the sinister smile.  And has Demelza been born again in the youngest Jago, Elizabeth?  And is Elizabeth even the youngest Jago?

Dita Vargo is the new lead in this dark tale, one with a sordid past of her own.  On the run from a man who has sworn to get her back at any cost, she is forced to remove her clothes for money, as a nude model.  Her only rule, no artists is to ever paint her face, for fear that her not so secret admirer will learn of her whereabouts.  So when she is warned by a friend that he is close, and Eddie her dear friend, asks her to accompany him to Cornwall, it seems the perfect escape.  Little does she know that she will be stepping into more danger, not less.

Echoes in the Darkness is a beautiful and epic Gothic Romance, keeping readers guessing until the very end, and leave goosebumps on every inch of the skin.  This incarnation of Arwen Jago will give Jack the Ripper a run for his money and have Norman Bates looking like a saint.

Legacy of Darkness Review

Legacy of Darkness by Jane Godman (ARC Review)
Published April 14, 2014
5 Dark Stars

"A deliciously dark tale that will definitely make you shiver and send more than a chill or two down your spine."

Synopsis -

1837 Cornwall, England

Orphaned, penniless and reduced to the role of lady's companion, Lucy Alleyne is relieved when a distant relation spirits her away to Castle Athal. But gratitude soon gives way to fear--and unlooked-for pleasure.

The ancient Cornish castle is a dark monument to family, fortune and blood. Within its walls, the Jago family keeps its wards close...and its secrets closer. Lucy is drawn to Tynan, Earl of Athal. The young heir is handsome and caring, yet tortured in his mind like his father before him. Tynan is utterly different from his uncle Uther--a commanding, seductive presence whose leonine power radiates from his every word and gesture.-

These two Jago men have innocent Lucy enthralled--mind, soul and body. But if she remains within the poisonous castle keep, with its history of ill-starred passion and madness, a mere broken heart will seem a mercy.  (Goodreads)

Review -

This is the first non-vampire novel that I have read in a very long time in which I can say I didn't even miss the fangs.  A tale that is truly dark and sinister that any fan of Gothic Romance would be sure to love, and crave for more.  Godman takes readers into a dark world in centuries past, where one families castle that has a history that may be as deadly as Count Vlad's, and even more sordid.

When Lucy is taken in by very distant relatives she at once feels like less than a squaller when she enters the beautiful and dark Gothic Manor, and takes in all the riches that belong to the family name.  But she soon learns that the grass isn't always greener.  For within the walls of the castle lie the secrets of long dead ancestors, one in particular that had no compunction in making a pact with the Devil.  And while people would have her to believe the sounds she's been hearing to be nothing more than that of the atmosphere that is making her imagination run wild, the truth is far more horrifying, and possibly deadly.  She will also learn every woman should, never trust a man willing to give you every pleasure imaginable, without expecting anything in return, even release.  Uther Jago is determined beyond reason to produce a Jago heir, and not just to keep the family name alive.

Walk into the halls of the Jago Castle where nothing and no-one is as they seem, not even relationships.  Where trusting your instincts may very well be the only thing that could keep you alive.   Where reincarnation has never been more deadly.
